WorldStar Packaging Award Win: How Partnership Powers Scalable Circular Packaging

Global recognition is always rewarding – but when it reflects real, scalable impact, it matters even more.

Viscount is proud to share that, in partnership with Woolworths Group, we have received a 2026 WorldStar Packaging Award for the Woolworths Reusable eCom Tote. This global recognition follows our Gold win at the 2025 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards in the Outside of the Box category – a prerequisite for entry into the 2026 WorldStar Packaging Awards.

While awards are an honour, this recognition is about far more than a trophy. It represents what’s possible when collaboration, engineering excellence and circular thinking come together to deliver a system that works – not just in theory, but at a national scale.

Designed Through True Partnership

From the outset, this project was built on a partnership. Working closely with Woolworths’ ReUse Co, we didn’t set out to design another product; we were briefed to find a solution to improve the original design, reduce breakage rates and bring it on shore to incorporate recycled material from old eCom totes. This resulted in a redesigned, fully circular, reusable system capable of operating within one of Australia’s most complex retail and eCommerce networks.

This shared approach enabled us to simplify processes, reduce costs and embed circularity into everyday operations – proving that sustainability and commercial performance don’t need to be mutually exclusive.

“Winning a WorldStar Packaging Award reinforces my belief in the power of collaboration to deliver meaningful change. This project shows what’s possible when Viscount and Woolworths come together to create a simplified solution that reduces costs while delivering outstanding sustainability outcomes,” said David Smith, CEO of Viscount.

Designed and Manufactured in Australia

The Woolworths Reusable eCom Tote is designed and manufactured entirely in Australia, using up to  90% recycled plastic sourced from end-of-life Woolworths totes. In doing so, it replaces imported, 100% virgin-plastic alternatives with a closed-loop, locally produced system.

At end of life, damaged totes are collected, reground, granulated and remanufactured into new totes here in Australia, keeping materials in circulation and optimising the value of the recycled material  This on shore approach reduces emissions, strengthens local supply chains and supports Australian manufacturing jobs.

A 300-gram weight reduction per tote has further reduced logistics emissions – without compromising durability or performance.

Engineering and Intelligence at Scale

Engineering excellence underpinned every redesign decision. Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Mould Flow Analysis (MFA), Viscount and Woolworths jointly modelled pressure points, load distribution and material flow. This allowed us to reinforce high-stress areas while reducing overall material use, resulting in a lighter, stronger tote designed to perform reliably across millions of use cycles.

The integration of RFID technology adds a level of intelligence rarely seen in reusable packaging at this scale. Each tote carries a unique digital identity, enabling shared visibility across usage, location, return rates and performance. This data supports predictive maintenance, continuous improvement and smarter design decisions over time.

Circularity Beyond the Product

Circularity isn’t just embedded in the tote, it’s built into the system that supports it. A standardised national recovery process operates across every Woolworths store, using existing backhaul logistics to return damaged totes for remanufacture. The result is simple and powerful: no waste, no landfill.

Recognition That Validates What Works

The WorldStar Packaging Awards, delivered by the World Packaging Organisation, are judged by an international panel assessing hundreds of global entries. Being recognised at this level validates that partnership-led circularity works when it’s designed to scale.

For us at Viscount, this award isn’t the end goal. It’s proof that when circular systems are built collaboratively, they deliver lasting value for business, communities and the planet – a standard we’ll continue to set.
